Sino-African agricultural cooperation started in the 1950s, and over the past decade tremendous progress has been made. But there are imminent challenges that need to be addressed in order to take cooperation to the next level.
First, inadequate agricultural infrastructure in Africa has limited the scope of cooperation. Irrigation only covers 5 percent of the total farmland in Africa despite the 60-plus cross-border rivers in the continent. Distribution of irrigation is unbalanced with the major irrigated farmlands concentrated in Madagascar and Sudan. Poor transportation also hinders agricultural development. According to the African Union, transport accounts for 20-40 percent of total production costs in inland African countries, well above the average in developed countries. In addition, only 40 percent of the continent is connected to a regular power supply which has seriously affected key links in agricultural production including processing, warehousing and logistics.
