The New Army Chief General Bipin Rawat said on Sunday (soon after assuming charge as the new COAS) that while the role of the Indian Army is to maintain peace and tranquillity at the border but it will not hesitate to use force if the need arises. “We want peace and tranquillity, but that doesn’t mean we are weak. The army will not step back or hesitate to use force if necessary,” Rawat said after inspecting a customary guard of honour at South Block.
General Bipin Rawat has taken over as the 27th Chief of the Army Staff. The General Officer was tenanting the appointment of the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) of the Indian Army from 01 Sep 2016. General Bipin Rawat was commissioned in the Fifth Battalion of the Eleven Gorkha Rifles in December 1978, from Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he was awarded the ‘Sword of Honour’.
