- India successfully launched the surface-to-surface ballistic missile Agni-V from the APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha in October of last year.
- The defence ministry said in a statement that the missile has a three-stage solid-fuelled engine and can hit targets up to 5,000 km away with a very high degree of accuracy.
India can now hit targets farther than 7,000 km away because the Agni-V missile is now much lighter. The Defense Research and Development Organisation, or DRDO, was able to make the missile lighter by using composite materials instead of steel.
“The weight of the missile system has been cut by more than 20%, and if the government wants, the strategic missile that can carry nuclear weapons can go farther than 7,000 km,” they said.
In the past, these kinds of changes have helped make the strategic missiles lighter and give them a longer range. The Agni-III, which weighs about 40 tonnes, can hit targets at a distance of 3,000 km, while the Agni-IV, which weighs a little more than 20 tonnes, has a much longer range.
The missile, which is part of the Strategic Forces Command, will give planners more options when there is a war because it has a longer range.
India has a no-first-use policy, so its nuclear weapons programme is mostly meant to scare off its enemies, like China and Pakistan.
India is improving its ability to launch a second attack and working on making a ballistic missile that can be launched from a submarine. Sources say that the government will have to decide whether or not to test the missile’s new maximum possible range.
India tested the Agni-V missile at its full range of 5,400 km at night on Thursday. The tests went well. The test was done to make sure that the missile’s new technologies and equipment, which make it lighter than before, worked well.
