Army Chief Meets Lanka PM, Discusses Military Cooperation


Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat began a four-day visit to Sri Lanka Monday, meeting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and discussed ways to further strengthen defence cooperation with the island nation.

Gen Rawat also met Army Commander Lt. Gen Mahesh Senanayake, Navy Commander Vice Adm S S Ranasinghe and Defence Secretary Kapila Waidyarathne. It is Gen Rawat’s maiden visit to Sri Lanka. He is also scheduled to meet the regional military commanders in Kandy and Trincomalee.

The visit is significant in light of India’s persistent efforts to strengthen the existing bonds of friendship and military cooperation based on mutual interests and understanding.

“The visit is yet another milestone in reaching out to our immediate neighborhood and take forward the military to military cooperation to the next level,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement. Read More…
