In a bid to speed up land acquisItion process for Chennai airport and second airport, a delegation of officers led by civil aviation secretary R N Choubey and Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra will meet chief minister and chief secretary on Friday. AAI had asked 200 acres for augmenting facilities at Chennai airport and another 1,500 acres will be needed for building a second airport. Including the need for existing airport at Chennai, the authority has asked for a total of 1,000 acres from the state government.

AAI sources said that the meeting was initiated by the ministry of civil aviation which wants to speed up expansion of airports in the state and also identify new land for second airport in Chennai. “Land requirement will be the prime agenda of the meeting,” said an official.

The ministry is looking at different options to encourage the state government to acquire land. These include land pooling by which land owners will be offered a chance to commercially utilise land near the airport when the facility comes up and also offering 50% of equity to the state government in the form of investment at the airport.
