AAI had asked 200 acres for augmenting facilities at Chennai airport and another 1,500 acres will be needed for building a second airport. Including the need for existing airport at Chennai, the authority has asked for a total of 1,000 acres from the state government.

The ministry is looking at different options to encourage the state government to acquire land.
