Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has arrived here today on a visit to Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Where he launched the Indian Navy’s Shivalik-class frigate INS Doonagiri in the Hooghly River. Named after a peak in Uttarakhand, this warship has been built by Garden Rich Shipbuilders and Engineers ie GRSE Shipyard in Kolkata.
INS Doonagiri is the fourth warship of Project-17A which was launched today. Under this project, a total of seven Shivalik class frigates are to be built for the Navy. Of these, four are being built at Mazagon Dockyard in Mumbai and the remaining three at GRSE. Mazagon Dockyard has already launched two warships of this class in the sea.

The third warship of this class, Udayagiri, was launched only last month. This is the second warship of GRSE. All these seven warships are named after different mountain ranges of the country.
Like the rest of the Shivalik class warships, Dunagiri is also an important identity of self-reliant India in the defense sector. 75 percent of the weapons, equipment and systems in this warship are indigenous. All these warships have been designed by the Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design.
This is the specialty of INS Dunagiri
All frigates of Project 17A, including the Dunagiri, are follow-ons to the Shivalik class (Project-17) warships and all have better stealth features, advanced weapons, sensors and platform management systems than their predecessors.
