Indian Priest Tom Rescued After Long Captivity


Vatican priest hailing from Kerala Father Tom Uzhunnalil has been rescued, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has confirmed.

His release from a long captivity has come after the intervention of Sultan of Oman, media reports said.

“I am happy to inform that Father Tom Uzhunnalil has been rescued,” Ms Swaraj said in tweet with a photo of the abducted priest.

“In compliance with the His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Oman in coordination with the Yemeni parties have managed find a Vatican priest. He has been transferred to Muscat from where he will return to his home in Kerala. Tom Uzhunnalil, a Vatican priest, expressed thanks to God Almighty and appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos. He also thanked his brothers and sisters and all relatives and friends who called on God for safety and release,” Oman observer has reported.

Father Tom Uzhunnalil, who hails from Kottayam, was abducted in March last year by the Islamic State terror group which attacked an old-age home run by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Yemen’s city of Aden.
