Govt Data Reveals There Are 70% More Foreign Terrorists In J&K Than Local Ones, Also Points To Recruitment Dip

Story Highlights
  • The data for each month shows that 19 FTs were killed in encounters with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir during the months of April and May.
  • Local terrorists are mostly used to attack the public, but foreign terrorists have been given the job of fighting against security forces and attacking them.

There are now 70% more foreign terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir than local terrorists (LTs).

The data also shows that the number of people joining terror groups has dropped by a lot, which suggests that groups based in Pakistan are now relying on foreign terrorists to disrupt law and order in J&K.

In the next week, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will go to Jammu and Kashmir for a high-level security meeting. Sources say he will also go to a few places, including places near the border.

The recent attacks on two buses in Udhampur that may have been caused by sticky bombs have made agencies and security forces nervous ahead of the home minister’s visit.

Agencies think that more sticky bombs, which were used a lot by IS Afghan and other groups in Afghanistan, will be used in J&K.

Former DG of the CRPF Kuldiep Singh, who retired on Friday, told the media on Thursday that there are more FTs in J&K, especially since the Taliban took over in Afghanistan.

From January to August of this year, there were about 141 terrorists, 84 of whom were Foreign Terrorists and 57 of whom were Local Terrorists.

Since 2019, there has been a drop in the number of people being hired. According to information from intelligence agencies, 181 people were hired in 2020, but that number dropped to 142 in 2021. Only 82 terrorists have joined terror groups so far this year (as of September 21).

Security forces have already killed 44 Foreign Terrorists, and the other 84 FTs are still active terrorists.

Data shows that more than 35% of the Foreign Terrorists who were killed by security forces could not be identified. Other foreign terrorists came from LeT (14) and JeM. (16).

The data for each month shows that 19 FTs were killed in encounters with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir during the months of April and May.

Top government officials said that foreign terrorists are more dangerous because they are better trained. “These terrorists are probably better trained than the Local Terrorists who are being used for lone wolf attacks. Local terrorists are mostly used to attack the public, but foreign terrorists have been given the job of fighting against security forces and attacking them. So far, the fact that there are more active foreign terrorists hasn’t had a big effect on security forces.

On Friday, the police and army in Bandipora found a lot of big guns and ammunition near the border. J&K Police said that in the Nowshehra Nard, Gurez area of Bandipora, they found seven AK-47 rifles, two pistols, 21 AK magazines, 1,190 rounds, 132 pistol rounds, 13 grenades, and other evidence.

This time, the security forces think there will be a lot of people sneaking in. October is still a big worry because it was the month with the most civilian deaths last year, and local media called it the deadliest month.
