Next Chief Of Defence Staff To Be Retired Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan

The Center announced on Wednesday that Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan (Retired) will be the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). In a statement, the ministry of defence said that the retired Lt. General will also work as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs.

In a statement from the defence ministry, it said, “Govt of India appoints Lt General Anil Chauhan (Retired) as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will also serve as Secretary to Government of India, Department of Military Affairs.”

A helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu’s Niligiris district killed the country’s first CDS, General Bipin Rawat, a few months before the appointment.

In his nearly 40-year career, Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan held a number of command, staff, and instrumental positions, and he had a lot of experience with counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast, according to the statement.

Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan was born on May 18, 1961. He joined the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. A graduate of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun and the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla. He was a Major General and led an Infantry Division in the Baramula area of the Northern Command.

Later, he was in charge of a corps in the northeast. After that, he became the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command in September 2019 and stayed in that position until May 31, 2021, when he left the military.

The officer was also in charge of important positions on the staff, such as Director General of Military Operations. The officer had also worked for the UN mission in Angola.

Even after he left the Army, he still helped with matters of national security and strategy. Lt. General Anil Chauhan (Retired) was given the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal for his great work in the Army.
