Quiet Visit By Defence Minister To Rohtang Tunnel Due To Hp Polls


As model code of conduct has already come into force in Himachal Pradesh due to upcoming assembly elections, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s visit to strategically-important Rohtang tunnel was a hush-hush affair.

The minister visited tunnel after completion of boring work on Sunday, but she avoided any interaction with public and did not make any political statement. She was initially supposed to visit the tunnel for an official ceremony on October 24. Last week, it was indicated that Sitharaman would oversee excavation of at least one metre to officially complete boring work of the tunnel.

Boring of the 8.8km-long tunnel was completed after a delay of over three years. The initial Rs 1,355-crore budget of the tunnel has inflated to Rs 4,035 crore. The tunnel is expected to open for general traffic by 2019. Read More…
