Authorities stated that at least 18 people, including two children, were killed in Russian missile attacks on residential structures in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa early on Friday (local time), one day after Russian soldiers retreated from a vital Black Sea island.
Buildings in Odessa may be seen on attack video in a burnt state.
18 people, including two children, killed, according to Kirill Tymoshenko, the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office. Serhiy Bratchuk, a spokesman for the Odessa regional government, reported 30 more injuries on the Telegram messaging service.
According to Ukrainian press reports, a multi-story residential building and a recreational area were the missile attack’s intended targets.
The assault comes after Russian forces left Snake Island on Thursday, which initially seemed to lessen the threat to Odessa. However, they persisted in their efforts to surround the final bastion of resistance in the eastern region of Luhansk.
The withdrawal from Snake Island was presented by the Kremlin as a “goodwill gesture”. The Ukrainian military stated that after a barrage of artillery and missile attacks, it forced the Russians to evacuate in two small speedboats. The precise number of soldiers was not made public.
Snake Island is located next to a busy shipping route. In the early stages of the conflict, Russia took possession of it in what appears to have been an effort to use it as a staging area for an attack on Odessa.
