Russia announced on Tuesday that it will hand over the bodies of 152 Ukrainian soldiers discovered beneath the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, which is currently under Russian control.
According to Russia’s defence ministry, its troops discovered “152 bodies of deceased terrorists and members of Ukraine’s armed forces” stowed within a refrigeration unit, as well as “four mines” beneath the remains.
“The Russian side intends to give over the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers and servicemen discovered on the Azovstal plant’s territory to Ukrainian representatives,” the ministry added.
The city’s last defenders were holed up in the underground tunnels beneath the huge Azovstal steelworks for weeks after Moscow gained control of Mariupol in late April.
