India—(BUSINESS WIRE)— Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security inspection technologies, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Navratna Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to make advanced X-ray screening technologies in India.
The MoU between Smiths Detection and BEL will use the high-end technological expertise of both companies to meet India’s security needs at home. The MoU was signed as part of the Indian government’s “Make in India” programme, which aims to increase the number of products made in India.
India needs more screening technologies because more people and goods are moving through important infrastructure, land borders, and sensitive points in cities. The Indian government is putting money into port and land border security to make it easier to do business and make people safer. Defense facilities, which need to check a large number of vehicles entering sensitive areas, are also pushing for the best X-ray scanning technology on the market.
BEL will take care of front-end needs in the market and help localise the projects. Smiths Detection will give its best screening technology and technical know-how. The MoU is good for five years, but it can be extended if both sides agree.
The head of Smiths Detection in India, Vikrant Trilokekar, said, “We are happy to announce the MoU with BEL. Together, we have the knowledge and experience to give the Indian Government the top-of-the-line screening technology it needs to meet its constantly changing security needs. Smiths Detection is committed to the Indian market, and we’re excited to see what opportunities our MoU with BEL will bring.
Director of Other Units at BEL, Bhanu Prakash Srivastava, said, “BEL’s main business is defence, but it is always looking for opportunities in related non-defense areas like homeland security and network and cyber security.” By working with Smiths Detection, BEL will try to meet the needs of the growing market for high-energy scanning systems. This is another step toward “Atmanirbharta,” which means “self-reliant India.”
