Three Indian Navy personnel killed, 11 injured in explosion in internal compartment of INS Ranvir

In an unfortunate incident at Naval Dockyard Mumbai, 3 Indian Navy personnel lost their lives in an explosion in an internal compartment onboard INS Ranvir, the Indian Navy’s destroyer vessel. 11 sailors with injuries are being treated at the local naval hospital, news agency ANI reported citing sources. No major material damage was reported, the Indian Navy said.

“Responding immediately, the ship’s crew brought the situation under control. There is no major material damage… INS Ranvir was on cross coast operational deployment from the Eastern Naval Command and was due to return to base port shortly. A Board of inquiry has been ordered to investigate into the cause,” Indian Navy officials said.

Taking to Twitter, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi offered condolences to the family members of the sailors who lost their lives. “The news of explosion onboard INS Ranvir is extremely sad. My condolences to the family and friends of the Navy sailors who’ve lost their lives. Wishing quick and complete recovery for the injured,” he said.

The identity of the deceased individuals has yet not been disclosed. The fourth of the five Rajput-class destroyers, INS Ranvir was commissioned into the Indian Navy on October 28, 1986.
