UN: Lt. Gen. Subramanian Takes Over The Largest Peacekeeping Operation

India’s Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian is now in charge of the UN’s largest peacekeeping mission, which is in South Sudan.
“It is a privilege to have the chance to serve for lasting peace in the world’s youngest country, South Sudan, by leading the world’s largest peacekeeping mission,” he said in Juba on Monday, according to the mission.
The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has 13,254 troops out of a total of 17,982 people working on it. Of those, 2,385 troops and 30 police officers are from India.
As he took over for another Indian, Lt. Gen. Shailesh Tinaikar, troops from India, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Rwanda, and Ethiopia gave him a guard of honour.
He took over from the interim commander, Major General Main Ullah Chowdhury of Bangladesh.
This is Subramanian’s second time working for the UN. In 2000, he was a staff officer for the UN mission in Sierra Leone.
Subramanian was the commandant of the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) and the General Officer Commanding of the Military Region Operational and Logistic Readiness Zone in Central India.
The DSSC says that Subramanian has been given the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Sena Medal, and the Vishisht Seva Medal. He joined the Corps of Army Air Defence in 1986.
According to the UN, he has also been the Additional Director General for Procurement and Equipment Management at the Defence Ministry’s Integrated Headquarters, the General Officer Commanding of a Strike Infantry Division, the Deputy General Officer Commanding of an Infantry Division, and the Commander of a Mountain Brigade.
According to the DSSC, he was in charge of an Air Defense Regiment in the Desert Sector and an Infantry Division in the Eastern Theater.
